Cultures are split or sold only when they are reproducing steadily enough that the main colony stays strong.

Tropical springtails

Tropical Springtail Culture Care: The Bayou Born Method

Bayou Born raises tropical springtails in a simple charcoal culture setup that is easy to maintain and easy to harvest from.

Container

Basic setup

A roughly six-cup container works well for a small culture. Use appropriate horticultural or lump charcoal. Avoid treated charcoal briquettes or anything with lighter fluid, additives, or fragrance.

Water level

Damp, not flooded

Keep water low in the bottom so the charcoal stays damp but is not fully flooded. The goal is a damp culture with oxygen exchange, not stagnant water.

Food

Nutritional yeast

Nutritional yeast is the main food. Feed lightly so the yeast is eaten before it molds heavily, then add more only as needed.

Temperature

Room temperature works

Most room temperatures in the low 70s to upper 70s Fahrenheit work well. Avoid overheating the culture or letting it dry out.

Maintenance

Watch the culture

Keep the charcoal damp, avoid stagnant conditions, and feed based on how fast the culture is eating instead of adding yeast on a fixed schedule.

Harvest

Tap, rinse, or float

Harvest by tapping or rinsing tropical springtails off the charcoal, or by floating them with water when you need to seed an enclosure or bin.

Isopods

General Bayou Born Isopod Culture Method

This is the foundation method. Individual cultures may need tweaks, especially around moisture, protein, and ventilation.

Substrate

Enough depth to hold moisture

Use substrate deep enough to buffer humidity and support burrowing, especially for larger or more moisture-dependent cultures.

Moisture

Make a gradient

Keep one side damp and one side drier so the isopods can choose. Avoid soaking the whole bin.

Foundation food

Leaf litter always matters

Keep plenty of leaf litter available. It is food, cover, humidity support, and the base of a stable culture.

Hides

Bark and cork pieces

Bark or cork gives isopods safe cover, surface area, and places to gather along the moisture gradient.

Calcium

Cuttlebone or eggshell

Offer calcium sources such as cuttlebone or eggshell so cultures have steady access for growth and reproduction.

Supplements

Rotate foods lightly

Supplemental foods can include vegetables, mushrooms, fish food, dried minnows or krill, and occasional protein.

Shed skin

Snake shed can be useful

Snake shed can be offered and is often eaten well. Remove extra foods before they mold badly.

Ventilation

Airflow keeps bins stable

Ventilation matters. A culture should stay humid where needed, but not stale, sour, or waterlogged.

Splitting

Wait for steady reproduction

Split or sell cultures only once they are reproducing steadily and can spare animals without weakening the main colony.
